I love the Super Bowl and all the hype surrounding the ads. The ads were mildly disappointing this year, but given the state of the economy, I think this is okay. I’m going to save you from a breakdown of my favorites, and instead point you to my brand winner and brand loser.
The brand winner for me was Miller High Life’s one-second “High Life!” commercial. It fits perfectly with High Life’s other ad campaigns (e.g., taking their beer out of an expensive restaurant because “$10 for a burger is ridiculous”). The ad was quick, simple, and to me, much more memorable than the plethora of Budweiser/Bud Light commercials.
The brand loser was Sprint. Now, Sprint didn’t technically have a “Super Bowl Commercial,” but they did have commercials that aired during the Super Bowl because of their partnership with the NFL. The reason Sprint is a big loser here is because they announced last week they are cutting 8,000 jobs this quarter. 8,000 jobs lost, yet they had three commercials during the Super Bowl. I think someone at Sprint needs to reconcile their marketing budget with their operating budget. As they say in politics, “you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig!”
