I’m a registered member of KansasCity.com, the Kansas City Star’s website, because I grew up in KC and I like to keep up with what’s going on in my hometown (to be honest, I mostly read about the Kansas City area sports teams). This morning, I received an email from them with the subject line: KansasCity.Com: Visit Kearney, Nebraska! What? Why would the newspaper of a great city like Kansas City be sending out crappy junk emails like this, especially to readers of the site who live out of state? And this isn’t the first email from KansasCity.com I’ve received like this. Most of the emails I receive from KansasCity.com are off-topic, unimportant and sales-y, just like this one.
John Jantsch recently wrote about the Kansas City Star’s problems with communication, and this is yet another example of their desperate attempt to cut costs and make a little money. It’s really sad to see a large-market newspaper publicly make such amateurish marketing mistakes. Sorry KansasCity.com, but you’ve officially lost my membership and access to my Inbox.

What a tricky way to make some money. Interesting.
I know, it really makes no sense. This just makes the paper seem like a trickster salesman rather than a source for unbiased information. Definitely not the way to appear like an authority or to win customers!
